Tbilisi Photo Festival was co-founded by the Georgian photography curator and journalist Nestan Nijaradze and the French photographer, current editor-in-chief of photography at the French daily newspaper Liberation, Lionel Charrier. The festival was first launched in 2010, in partnership with Les Rencontres d’Arles. Eight editions later it has become one of the major annual cultural events in the Caucasus. Presented at the fair is the work by Shalva Alkhanaidze (b. 1927 in the village Dano). Because of his poor health, he didn’t become a sheep-breeder as the local tradition demanded, but tried several different professions until he found photography. He set up a dark room and a studio at his home and started to shoot portraits. Outside of the studio, in the villages of Dano, Dartlo, Shenaqo, he started taking portraits of people living and working there, in their natural environment. In addition, his landscape photography reveals his fascination with nature.
