Marge Monko will serve as Artistic Director and Cloe Jancis as Executive Director of Tallinn Photomonth, the international contemporary art biennial returning for its ninth edition in 2027. Alongside announcing its new directors, Tallinn Photomonth is launching an open call for projects for next year’s satellite programme.

For its 2027 edition, Tallinn Photomonth will focus on the Baltic states and Finland, aiming to strengthen regional cultural ties in the current geopolitical context, shaped largely by Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

It is an exciting challenge to return to the role of Artistic Director of Photomonth after fifteen years. Since the beginning of this century, photography has been profoundly transformed by both digital technologies and artificial intelligence. This edition’s programme will introduce the practices of artists working in our immediate region who seek to make sense of these changes, while also bringing visual enjoyment at a time of political anxiety.

– Marge Monko

The ninth edition of Tallinn Photomonth will take place in August and September 2027. The biennial programme and the open call for the public-space exhibition will be announced at the beginning of the year.

Marge Monko is an artist and filmmaker. From 2017 to 2025, she was Professor in the Photography Department at the Estonian Academy of Arts. She was also the Artistic Director of the inaugural Tallinn Photomonth in 2011.

Cloe Jancis is a photographic, video and installation artist. She has worked at the Estonian Artists’ Association and the Photography Department of the Estonian Academy of Arts and has created stage and exhibition designs.

Alongside the main programme, Tallinn Photomonth will feature a satellite programme of exhibitions and events taking place at various galleries and art spaces across Tallinn.

We welcome projects focusing on camera-based ways of seeing that engage with the biennial’s focus. The satellite programme aims to complement the main programme by expanding on the biennial’s themes through diverse approaches, introducing a range of artists, exhibition venues and creative initiatives to both local and international audiences.

Exhibition institutions, artists, curators and other practitioners working in the field of visual arts are invited to apply with their projects. The biennial’s satellite programme may include exhibitions, film screenings, book launches, performances, and projects in urban space. Events must be open to the public and take place during the biennial period, from mid-August to mid-October. Projects may take place in both private and public spaces in Tallinn and its surrounding areas. Project organisers are responsible for securing the venue and covering all costs associated with realising their project.

Projects selected for the satellite programme will be featured across the biennial’s official communication channels and promotional materials and will be included in the biennial’s events and public programmes.

To apply for the satellite programme, applicants must complete the application form and provide a project description with visual material, confirmation from the exhibition venue (for exhibition projects), and CVs and short biographies of the participants. The application deadline is 30 November 2026 at 23:59. The organisers of Tallinn Photomonth will select projects, and applicants will be notified of the results by the end of 2026.
