Residency: Ellen Suhrke and Hans Hansen

12.09–12.10.2017

Narva Art Residency

Partikkel Zoo, 2017, exhibition view at Oppland Kunstsenter, Lillehammer, Norway

In collaboration with Narva Art Residency the Tallinn Photomonth biennial is organising a residency for the first time. For this month-long stay in Narva, Photomonth has invited Norwegian artists Ellen Henriette Suhrke and Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen.

Ellen Henriette Suhrke’s (b. 1984) practice may be seen as meditations on nature and culture, where human interaction with the environment plays a vital role.  In an ongoing series of works she explores how species of animals and plants are thriving in places where they are not wanted, as a consequence of human interference with nature. This topic has led her to seek out the wild camel population in Australia, wild rabbits in Helsinki and the jungle crows in Tokyo.

Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen (b. 1985) explores his immediate surroundings – environments that one constantly visits and takes for granted, and that the eye has worn out. Hansen aims to take materials seriously, even if they are found in the cracks of a sofa or in the bottom of our pockets. Not to shape them by predetermined ideas, but let the inherent characteristics of the material lead the way. As a passive artist, he is led by the minuscule, often tuned into a layer of debris from the streets or the seabed. Where one can find a visual undercurrent of shapes, surfaces, colours and stories that open up new horizons downwards and inwards.

The residency programme is delivered in collaboration with the Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonian Ministry of Culture, Narva Gate OÜ, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tallinn and Nordic Council of Ministers´Office in Estonia.
